Last week I visited Longwood Gardens outside Philadelphia to enjoy their
Chrysanthemum Festival, which is splendid. These are all exotic mums, raised in
greenhouses, not the bush mums you see in the Northern states. This is the
entrance to the Gardens.
Pierre DuPont built these conservatories about 1920 for his own pleasure. They cover
four acres of ground and house hundreds of thousands of plants. This is the entrance
to the Main Conservatory.
The East Aisle has yellow "Allyson Peace" Decorative mums, "Bill Holden" purple balls of
Reflex Mums, the low-growing "Old Roanoke" Mums, delicate pink "King's Delight"
quill mums, "Evening Glow" spider mums, and mum trees of "Tsuribito" pink cascade mums.
The large hanging ball is also "Tsuribito" pink mums.
The balls are "Bill Holden" reflex mums; the lower are "Old Roanoke." On either side is
a new variety of coleus, "Marrakesh."
Pale pink "King's Delight" quill mums with "Old Roanoke."
"Old Roanoke" low growing mums.
"Old Roanoke" mums. Each one is different in color, with variations of pink, lavender,
white, and purple, much more interesting than a flat overall lavender.
A single blossom of "Bill Holden."
"King's Delight" quill mums.
A single flower of "King's Delight." As these plants grow, all side branches and buds are
pinched off, so that the plant produces only one, large flower at the top of the stem.
